I've volunteered once at a school, Dee elementary school at 550 E 22nd St, Ogden, UT. Me, volunteering! Or rather working as an assistant teacher at a school! I'm still a freshman and I've been in the States just for a few months. Sounds so odd, right? Well, that was exactly what came in my mind first day at the school, Dee elementary school at 550 E 22nd St, Ogden, UT. Which was as part of the level five's spring class " Community", in 2013, that’s also a part of the ESL program for the international students. It directed by the director of the institute Pro. Debi alongside the actually leader of the team, Mrs. Petrson. I might be reacting excessively, but this is the reality of me, who don't have any clue about teaching, and most importantly lacking linguistically. It wasn't only me, but also my Mexican friends that I met and have become friends since then: JJ, Monica, and Mariah. Not to mention the Asian: Lee, Steven Katherine, and Jea Soo. In brief, the whole team for sure did felt the same. We were about seventeen to nineteen students from various countries who just have been here for a negligible period of time. For absolute, communicating with each other is extremely a hard challenge itself.
From one sight, anyone can see that we weren't a few. For sure, the situation would not be limited merely to teaching writing or solving math problems. Accordingly, we were divided into two to three groups. Each one was responsible for a specific age range. I've been part of who responsible for second- grader once, sixth-grader, and what I called “ the special class.” Through each one of them, I felt of a half of which teachers suffered by every day, as well as made me feel extremely sorry about what I've done to my teachers so far.
Firstly, some of team including me, Lee, and Monica had to deal with the super hyper second graders, which was so stressful much to get you standing helpless. They talk a lot, move harshly, fight all the time with each other, and the most wearisome, they had a question to ask about almost everything. For more than three weeks, which means three classes, I feel like I being put in an intensive challenge to measuring my ability to resist. I mean they were cute and funny somehow, but hard to handle, especially with under pressure person like me. On the other hand, Lee managed to attract some of them through his skill in Origami. As well as, Monica was dealing with them so professionally. Of course she’s a mother of five kids. However, I couldn't help but think of asking the teacher’s who was in charge to assign me in other tasks.
Consequently, I was transferred to the sixth grade team and there, the conditioners started to change. You know, how is it the admission test hall? The room was pretty much like that. Just imagine, almost sixteen rows each of them contain thirteen to fourteen students. They were entirely focused on solving equations. It could be seen the look of seriousness in their eyes. The sounds you could hear in the room are the pushing bottoms of the keyboard and thumbing nothing else. I even thought, why we were there precisely with those who don't seem need us? Anyone can definitely imagine how nervous and somehow a little timorous I was standing in front them. The only one could be asked to help among of us was Katherine, the Chinese friend. She’s really a genius in mathematics.
As for me, I have spent all the time with greatest difficulty avoiding their looks and hiding from the teacher sight. Indeed, they were far better than the second graders. However, what was a sense of helplessness and dissatisfaction that I became at that time for?
Fortunately, those who were in charge Mrs. Petrson and the under director of the school have decided to put us in a place that should be from the beginning. To be honest, I don’t know what was that class, yet I named it, the special class. It was a class for those who have some mental problems, particularly. I thought this would be the real recondite challenge. This time we are dealing with those who don’t have the control in their actions. Instead, it turned into an incredible time that we were so glad to have able to spend it. They were slow to speak, think and react. Too much talking and exaggerated pressure may have dissipated them and change their behaviors suddenly. Yet, those kids were wonderfully nice and talented. Over and above, they talked with us respectfully and appreciated that we have come for them and to help them. Moreover, I was shocked to find out how clever they were and have an amount of information even I don’t know about. Every week was holding a great adventure for both of us, including playing basketball, succor, planting, doing Origami, and more. Whatever I’ve said, yet still couldn’t describe how gorgeous they were and how distinctive the time was with them.
In conclusion, anyone can notice that I’ve begun my essay with a kind of pessimistic phrases, but they have been changed at the time of this experience went by. Likewise, that what I’ve felt going through all this. It was my first time. Nevertheless, in those days I’ve spent, I’ve myself already into this class’s goal. Justly, I’ve been really fortunate to experience this with fabulous teachers and a great team that I even have become interested in the culture of each of them. Even though, I’ve got several troubles and put in unreasonable situations, I’ve been able to improve my English through coming into contact with my teammates and students. More than that, I’ve been able to understand the mentality of the student from the perspective of the teacher as its assent.
